I bought a refurbished laptop from Staples in July last year. I set it up when I got it, put in the product key, activated windows and everything seemed to be working fine. Then, out of the blue about 2 months ago, I suddenly got a popup message telling me my version of Windows7 was not genuine and I might be a victim of counterfeiting. I hadn't installed anything or re-installed Windows, it just happened out of the blue. Since then every time I restart the computer I get the 'not genuine' popup, my desktop background is always black with a message stating 'build This copy of Windows is not genuine'.
Other things also do not work, like my audio. At one point it showed an error code as well which I wrote down, it is 0x I've tried googling for this code in relation to non-genuine errors and can't find anything.
I have tried various things to fix the problem including re-entering the product key and various fixes suggested on internet forums legitimate fixes, not dubious ones! When I tried re-entering the product key I got the message 'this does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 product key'. I went through a free Windows support live chat, and at the end of a very time-consuming conversation the person told me the Windows key wasn't valid.
However I have contacted the supplier of the refurbished laptop Microsoft accredited supplier affiliated with Staples who spoke to Microsoft and was told the key is valid. He was also told this problem has been happening more recently with the release of Win My System window currently shows the Windows status at the bottom which says I need to activate Windows.
When I click to activate I get the popup window telling me it's not genuine. When I go online to resolve the problem I can't do it through my browser it says by browser can't run the script so instead I download a file. The end result is a window telling me that it can't validate my copy of Windows. I've done this a few times now, always with the same result. Run the MGADiag tool from the link below. This is the license key on my old ThinkPad bought it long time ago, and I still have it, but running another OS. I have just installed the Windows 7 on my other laptop with Windows 7 using this license; it has worked well for me for a while, but all of sudden I got this black screen and this "Windows 7 Build This Copy of Windows is not genuine" message. So either you're confused or the key was being used illegitimately to begin with.
In an case, it's not transferable, being an OEM license, which explains why it's being flagged now. This site in other languages x.
